To check spread of rumours which has led to exodus of northeastern people from certain states, government banned bulk SMSes and MMSes from 18 August 2012 t0 2 Sep 2012 (15 days) across the country.
"In India, from 18th August 2012, till 1st of September, you would not be able to send more than 5 sms per day. TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has banned bulk SMS and MMS for 15days. All the Cellphone operators have been asked to block all bulk SMSes and videos so that no one can send a message to more than five people at a time as for a national security."

No one will be able to send more than 5 SMSes in one go and more than 20 KB of data through mobile phones during the ban period.

However this 15-day ban on bulk SMS and MMS will create a huge loss to many telecommunication companies.

The 5 SMS per day ban is due to the reports of threatening messaging via various means to the North-Eastern people living in cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. These threatening messages were sent via e-mails, SMS, MMS and posts on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.
